Ann Arbor Impulse

I had a blast with my roommates! And I loved all of your awesome comments on my last post! I’m so glad that you all strive to be responsible, proactive people!

I realized that the last time we were together was actually in September of 2008 for a quick breakfast date. It was so quick I totally forgot about it! This get-together was long overdue. My roommate Jess married our college friend, Dan (we actually met Jess through Dan), and so we got to hang out with Dan as well.

There was pizza made with homemade dough that exploded…

And a round of Killer Bunnies (best game ever! You need to go play it!)…

P4230008

And a visit to the University of Michigan…

This city is so picturesque. It reminded me a lot of State College…a beautiful small city, with a gorgeous university, and streets lined with shops!

Despite the dreary weather, we toured the campus and hit up some stores. The ones that interested me sold food, obviously.

Like YogurtRush for some tart frozen yogurt… Amanda and I were the only two who got excited about it, and we ended up getting almost identical FroYos!

P4240036

We also stopped at The Cupcake Station and I chose a mini Vabulous Vegan chocolate cuppy cake!

P4240039

It’s stinkin’ cute and delicious!

I did pack healthy options, but sugar always wins the battle of the taste buds. ;)

P4240011I did pick up some dried cantaloupe at World Market and I fell in love! I need to find more!

But then, Dan, my roommates husband suggested a stop in the outdoors store, Moosejaw. Cleary is was right up my alley, and I didn’t intend on spending any money..

But then I saw them.

I have been talking about them.

Lusting after them.

Promising them to myself as a marathon gift…

Vibram FiveFingers

P4240043

You need to understand that I have an impulsive nature, but I’ve become pretty good at keeping it in check.

However…

I just wanted to try them on to see what size I would need to order after the marathon. Then I realized that my marathon is only a week away, and if I bought them now I wouldn’t have to pay shipping…

P4240047

Surprise, Dave! Just ignore that charge on the credit card!!! I’ve got my Sprint FiveFingers!

P4240045 P4240046

So I went for a 5 mile run with Amanda to try them out! While the other roomies sat on the couch and drank beer

P4240048 P4240049

JUST KIDDING!

No, I really did buy them! And the girls were drinking beer…and Amanda and I did go for a run. But I wore my Brooks.

You cannot just hit the pavement in FiveFingers. Your feet would probably go in shock! So I’m not going to begin to get my feet adjusted to the Five Fingers until after the marathon (don’t want to screw anything up)…and when I do start, I’m going to begin by only walking in them and gently progress. However, they do make me feel closer to my amphibious friends. Or like Gollum…so I decided to call them “my preciousssss”. Wow, second LOTR reference in a row? I won’t blame you if you stop reading now.

Anyhow, does anyone have any FiveFinger advice? I’m looking forward to the new running adventure!

Welp! I’m out! Dave and I are enjoying dinner with some POM Wonderful mocktails!

What’s your favorite impulsive buy? Are you a very impulsive person, or are you more cautious?

This is too funny! I love those vibram fingers. YOu do look like some kind of creature, haha! Glad you had a great trip!

  3. Those Vibram fingers are so cool! I would love a pair, just because I think they are awesome – I wouldn’t run in them, but I’ve heard they are good for other exercise too!

    • abbynormally says:

Yea they are! The Sprints (which I bought) are really versatile… including things like hiking and canyoneering–you know, cuz of all the canyoneering that I do.

  4. I’m super jealous, I want a pair of five fingers! Did you find that they were true to your normal shoe size or did you have to go with a different size? Just curious, because I’m thinking I may have to make that “impulse” purchase myself!

  5. Alyssa says:

I am SO excited to hear how you like these. I’ve been thinking about purchasing a pair but i just don’t know how I feel about them yet. Impulse buys are the best. I can honestly say I’ve only done it twice. Once for a plan ticket to Spain and then another plane ticket to Costa Rica. I just decided one day I wanted to go so I went. Ha! Didn’t think it through at all.. worked out well though!

I’m glad you had a blast with your friends! Looks like you had a great time!! I love time with my ladies :)

    • abbynormally says:

I would LOVE to have an impulsive plane ticket purchase!!! That’s like my dream :) Way cooler than Vibrams!

  6. lol…you are too funny. I totally thought you hit the road with them. I love your ‘ignore this charge on the credit card’ hehe…I tell that to myself all the time…

    • abbynormally says:

Hahha nope! I am not that impulsive! But impulsive enough to be familiar with the feeling of dread when I look at the credit card balance! Thankfully I haven’t felt that dread for this purchase!

  7. Julianne says:

How cool. I know nothing about them, so I’m interested in hearing how they work for you!

  8. Melissa says:

Haha, those shoes are SO ugly but I’ve always wanted a pair. :) Or at least to try them on and see how they feel. I’m interested in how my feet would feel.

And let me just say that froyo AND a cupcake is awesome. Yum yum!

  9. Courtney says:

ahh I just ordered these this morning! I too have been lusting after them since I first was introduced to them about a year ago, and now that I actually might consider myself a runner, and am in need of new running gear, I figured this would be a nice little treat!

let me know how you like them over the next week, as mine probably won’t arrive for a little while yet!

    • abbynormally says:

I probably won’t be using them over the next week because my marathon is on Sunday, but I’m sure you’ll love your new pair!!

  10. Ashley says:

Ohhh my gosh!! I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you got them!! I’m a few days back on my blog reading…I about flipped out when you said you ran 5miles in them, lol. I finally realized that you can’t think of running as your cardio when you’re first using the Vibrams until you figure out how your feet are adapting to them. I’m just about ready to start trying again, since getting over my foot strain. I try to walk around in them, or just my bare feet as much as possible. Send me some photos so I can put them up on my VFF page!!! The difference is amazing..I can hardly wear regular shoes anymore. Can’t wait to hear when you start wearing them! :)

    • abbynormally says:

Man, I just wore them to the grocery store and I can already tell that I only want to wear them! Down with conventional shoes!

  11. kerry says:

    those fivefingers look weird!!

  12. Kacy says:

Yay for a new toy! We’re getting those in at the store soon and I can’t wait to try them on to see how they feel. I don’t know if I’ll buy any, but I think they’re super cool.

And you’re definitely smart to ease into wearing them. I’m sure it will be a big shock to your feet!

  13. Jess says:

I’ve seen people wear those at races and I think they look so weird. I can’t imagine how they possibly work, but I’m really interested to hear what you think of them!

    • abbynormally says:

I’ve been reading up on them and I understand the science behind them! I’m hoping that I can ease myself into them!!

  14. Amanda says:

I would just like to throw out a disclaimer!!!

I couldn’t fit my running shoes in my carry-on so I stayed and drank because I was on vacation!!! However, I am a runner and have run a half already!

    • abbynormally says:

LOL. You slacker! *Real* runners put their shoes in FIRST!

      Just kidding, roomie!!

Sort of.. I mean.. I did put mine in first. ;)

  15. JSheids says:

I look TAN in that picture! But I also look like I should have skipped the Captain and Pepsi and gone running. Yikes!

    • abbynormally says:

Oh, Jess. You’re a babe! Accept it and move on! Thanks for being an awesome hostess!! :)

      • JSheids says:

Haha! This is why I love you!
Seeing your dedication kind of gave me a push though. I’ve been wanting to be healthier for a long time, and I go on little kicks here and there, but it never lasts. I talked to Dan about trying to make some lifestyle changes. Less technology, less alcohol (!), less soda, more activity, more water and maybe some green stuff. I’m trying to do little things here and there that will hopefully become habit. I think trying to make drastic changes all at once just leads to feeling deprived.
But I can’t give up my margaritas entirely….

        • abbynormally says:

You can do it! Diets don’t work, lifestyle changes do! But they are slow and require commitment. I promise you have my support.

And please, don’t give up maragaritas for anything!

  16. I can’t wait to hear more of what you think about the shoes!!!

  17. I really want some Vibram’s! I got my husband a pair for Xmas but he has yet to wear them for a run some reason. And although I have not heard of Killer Bunnies, I LOVE games!! Must buy it :)
While I am normally a very frugal person, I do tend to make impulse buys quite often. Those buys are easy to justify because of how frugal I am (ha!).

  19. [...] Since getting my Vibrams, Dave’s been intrigued with barefoot running, but wasn’t sure if he wanted to go the whole way to "nothing". He actually ended up with a pair of Sauconys. Dave over-pronates slightly when pushing off of his foot, so he didn’t need a stability shoe with the extra support called “posting”. He needed something that gave support, but still had a flexible toe. [...]

  20. [...] I needed some guidelines. I have been wearing these “shoes” every opportunity possible since I bought them in April. And the 1/2 mile today felt good, but I definitely don’t want to trick myself OR my [...]
