Beach Bound, Book Bound
May 22nd, 2010
I loved your input on my last post! Isn’t it amazing how we all have different interests and skills so that we can all reach a variety of people in a variety of ways?! It never ceases to amaze me how each individual has been given special gifts and talents. It makes life so interesting! Thanks for your input! I always love hearing from you!
Now like most people, I use vacation as a time to unwind. However “unwinding” means different things to different people. For me, I’m the vacationer who is either lounging somewhere with a book, or sound asleep. That’s how I unwind. My husband is totally opposite. He’s always thinking “what next?” For example, the minute he finishes breakfast, he’s wondering what the plans for lunch are. He keeps it interesting, but at the same time, it’s hard for Abby the vacationer to keep up with Dave the vacationer. In fact, when we travel with my family, we take turns “playing with Dave.” No joke.
Regardless, I’m still committed to getting some serious reading done this week. I used to read all of the time—and not light stuff. I like books that make me think and force me to reread paragraphs and even chapters for a second or third time. But once I got a “real” job and had a “grown up” life, some activities took precedence. Unfortunately reading wasn’t one of them.
Shame on me.
C.S. Lewis, who is by far my favorite author, wrote, “it is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between.”
So that’s what I am doing this week. Want a peak at my reading list for the week?
New Book 1:
The Stranger, by Albert Camus
Old Book:
The Abolition of Man, by C.S. Lewis
New Book 2:
Born to Run, by Christopher McDougall
What kind of vacationer are you? Do you like the opportunity to kick your feet up or do you like the opportunity to fit it all in?
What books are you reading? Is there a favorite book that you turn to?
I often turn to Harry Potter or a C.S. Lewis book like Till We Have Faces. However, The Abolition of Man has been on my mind recently, so I wanted to revisit it. I did compile a list of my ten favorite books along with the reasons why I love them so much. You can read the list here.

Hello Abby, I think this is the first time I leave a comment on your blog…but I have been reading you for a while now,I really like your blog!Btw, I think we have quite similar degree
even though I graduated in Italy! I remember loved l’etranger by Camus, maybe I should read it again though because it faded in my mind … enjoy your vacation time!!
I Iwsh I liked to read. I can read on a plane, but thats it. When travel to Hawaii is where I read the most. 7 hours will do that to ya. haha! I like to chill on vacation but stay active and go explore. Ya, i’d say I’m in between you and dave. HAVE FUN!
depends on if its a trip or vacation! Trips/travelling are places I’ve never seen and have things I’ve always wanted to do and see, such as Paris, Rome, Australia etc. so I’m a Dave on those trips. But if its a vacation (such as the family vacation for two weeks every year to Hilton Head Island—my favourite place ever!!!) I literally wake up, go to the outdoor pool swim a leisurely two hours if I feel like it, eat a HUGE bowl of fresh fruit and coffee with a book on the porch then head to to the beach and lay on my towel either reading or sleeping all day until dinner. At night, I will do whatever the family wants, or if its raining. But if there is sun, the most movement I do is flipping over to even out my tan!
I’m with you on the reading and sleeping is unwinding on vacation!!! Vacation= lots of books on a beach!
I am a very relaxed vacationer. I like to get my walks and runs in to explore but then I am beach bound. I am currently reading Thrive, just started it. Have a wonderful time!!
I LOVE reading. It is really something I have found over the past couple of years, and I don’t know how I lived without it. I am currently reading The Green Mile by Stephen King and it’s sooo good (I’ve seen the movie, but like a million years ago). I really like all kind of books, but one of my all time favs is Picture of Dorian Grey, I really love classic literature.
My husband and I sound just like you two, except I’m the one that wants to know what’s next after breakfast. I think I drive my husband crazy with being like that. =)
I laughed so hard when I read your opening – my husband and I are the same and you two are. When I go on vacation, I want to sit somewhere warm with a book or magazine in my head. My husband on the other hand, cannot sit still.
Ironically, I am such a planner but when it comes to vacation, I just want a plane ticket and a place to stay. No other plans. He, on the other hand, wants every second planned out. For our vacation this summer, he has already figured out what we are doing and where we are going each day. Drives me crazy!
I am definitely a lazy vacationer, unless it is to a place I will unlikely return to (like a trip to Europe or something equally remarkable). But just a trip to the beach – give me a book, sunscreen, and a lounge chair and I’ll see you later. Have a great trip!
I love lazy and relaxing vacations. But if I’m in Disney World or in a new country, I want to get up and GO!
) I have trouble sitting still, even when I want to. When the boyfriend and I went to Mexico and lounged for 5 days, that was the first time I’d ever gone on vacation and actually returned feeling well rested.
Wow, the Stranger! We read this book in high school and then did a mock trial. I forget exactly what it was about, I just know that I won haha
It’s so sad that this is all I remember about it- will have to read again, just like you!
I hope you have a great time on vacation! Enjoy your reading and relaxing. That’s my style too!
