The Ogre Cookie

***Don’t forget about my Dove Visibly Smooth Giveaway!***
Dave and I always said that we would never have a TV in our bedroom.
I guess that’s what happens after almost two years of marriage.
Looking back on it now, I really don’t know what our rationalization was. And what’s even more alarming is that the thought was brought up this weekend, and on Tuesday Dave purchased it. If you know Dave, you know that is so out of character. It takes him forever to make a decision (that’s why he went by himself to buy it—I don’t have the patience) and he is so reluctant to spend money. He also got us Netflix and X-box Live to stream said Netflix. Who is this man?!
Anyhow.
We set down some “rules” and some “guidelines” concerning our addition. My one request that the Pens remained OUT of our bedroom. I get enough of them, and so far my only reprieve from hockey is in my bedroom. Heaven help me if I ever fall asleep to Bob Errey. I will not have this sanctuary adulterated!
Dexter is kind of sad that he will now get less attention than he already does. I know secretly he was wishing this meant he could watch TV with us in bed. Nope, you’re stuck on the floor. I know you sneak up on the couch when we’re not around.
Meanwhile I’m going to sit on the bed, blog, eat Caesar Salads and watch New Moon. Can you believe I haven’t seen New Moon yet?! I’m over Twilight, but I’m still excited to see the movie.
As for Caesar salads—I’m in need of intervention. I’m going on a solid week of at least one Caesar salad a day.
HELP.
Other obsessions? Honey and dates. But I’m quite content to continue stuffing my face with those.
In fact, my friend and reader Lindsey (Hi, Lindsey!!!) sent me a message on Facebook looking for a chocolate chip and nut cookie recipe made with honey instead of cane sugar. While I didn’t have one ready, I did some searching, found a decent one, and made some modifications (like adding dates).
May I present to you…
The Ogre Cookie
Affectionately known as “Shrek”.
Yup, they are green! I substituted avocado for butter and I LOVE the result!
1/2 cup pureed avocado (about one medium avocado—thrown in the food processor)
1/2 cup honey
1 egg
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
~1/4 cup chocolate chips
~1/4 cup chopped dates/raisins/whatever fits your fancy
~1/4 cup chopped pecans/almonds/whatever floats your boat
Preheat oven to 375.
Mix pureed avocado, and honey until “fluffy”. Add in egg.
Sift flour, baking powder, and salt, then add to the honey mixture. Add in vanilla and mix.
Fold in chocolate chips, dates, and nuts.
Spoon onto lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes. The dough looks like ogre poo!
Keep in mind that honey browns more easily than sugar.
These little Shreks are moist and cake-like. Next time I will add more “stuff” (nuts and chips and all that jazz), but I really can’t complain about these especially because I have never baked with avocado before and I didn’t have any cold, hard “avocado for butter” facts.
And since I was already channeling my inner Ashley, I made some pecan butter with the remaining pecans while my ogres were cooking. This was so easy! I’m kind of bummed that I bought 2 jars of nut butter on Monday.
Pecans + food processor = pecan butter. I will never buy nut butter again.
Yum.
Well, I think that completes my kitchen-quota for 2010. Check back in January for a new recipe.
Just kidding. I have some other recipes up my sleeve…
Like Caesar salads.
Have you made any wacky baking or cooking substitutions lately? Is there something you used to buy at the store but you now you make yourself?

I think I’m in reverse of this trend… given all my stuff is in boxes in storage, I’m purchasing everything at the store. I’m really, really missing my blender and food processor. In a big way.
And, now I want cookies….
aww I should send you some!!! Or just bring them to you!
I al OBSESSED with caesar salads, too. SO GOOD.
YEa, part of me doesn’t want any intervention!
YUMMY!! I love that they are green. James will love the avo in them too. Good job girl!
Thanks!!!! I want to make the GF, but I didn’t know how.I thought about using ground oatmal. Do you think that would work?
Okay those cookies look so good! I am trying them out!!! Thanks for sharing
They are really good! I took them to work so other people could eat them and not just me!!!
I have a TV in my room and I rarely watch it! It just kind of sits there most of the time…
hahah yea.. I see the potential for that here.
I left a comment and it’s not here. GAH. So my comment was that the beginning about the TV was quite hilarious. We actually got rid of our bedroom TV when we moved to Colorado. It’s good for me because I would always stay up later than I wanted watching a double header of Friends or Iron Chef
The dog is cuuute..Dakota [the boxer] gets on the furniture when we’re gone too. Sneaky furballs! The cookies look + sound great!! Did you sub 1:1 avo for butter? Channel your inner Ashley…LOL…I’ve had a sample jar of the Artisana pecan butter for awhile now and rarely use it because it is so good and I have so little of it. A reader JUST sent me fresh pecans from her pecan tree so I will definitely be making some asap. I absolutely LOVE pecans. So buttery..mmm
We’ve started throwing a bunch of stuff on te furniture so Dex stays off.. but then we realized he just pushes it off!!! Little terd!
I did a 1:1 ratio, too for the avocado. Worked out better than I could have expected! So moist! I need to channel my inner Ashley more often!
[...] bought from the store. I have a feeling these are going to butterize really easily. Abby actually made pecan butter tonight aaand an amazing cookie using avocado instead of [...]
I’m with you on the salad addiction. I’ve been having a ton of goat cheese and cucumber salads. I cannot get enough!
That sounds sooo good!!! I think I want that salad to be my next addition!
My husband and I also have a TV in the bedroom which I think we have watched twice in almost 2 years – I hate having it there!
Love the idea of substituting avocado for butter- what a great swap.
Thanks for posting the recipe!
Yea… we’re actually watching it now, but that’s because it’s a novelty. It will wear off soon enough, I’m sure.
And the avocado worked wonderfully. It kept them soooo moist! Definitely try it if you can!
I know my commenting is late on this one since there’s already a new post – but I just had to tell you how excited I am to try and bake these cookies!!! i have recently seen some recipes with avocado as a sub but yours looks good enough that i think im finally ready to try it!!!
And i also am, or at least was, in the “no tv in the bedroom” camp, not only because of the notion of leaving the bedroom as a sanctuary, but also because i had difficuly sleeping for several years and having a tv in the room can actually be disrupting to sleep. buuttttt my husband really likes watching tv to fall asleep, so i have a feeling that since we’re moving in the near future anyway..our new place may end up with a t.v. in the bedroom. and if we do, i am definitely going to request your rule as well of no sports in the bedroom… they steal my husband from me enough as it is!
I hope that you like them! I was really pleased with the result!
So far the TV hasn’t been too bad–as long as it’s off before I fall asleep. If I fall asleep when it’s on, then I wake up in worse condition than if I didn’t sleep at all! So, it’s not the worst thing–but I suggest laying down some rules and telling the sports to stay where they belong!!!
Mmmm these cookies look delightful. I’ve made black bean avocado brownies before. They weren’t the best brownies I’d ever had but they didn’t go to waste, letmetellyou. Haha. I will have to try these.
It would be shame if a brownie ever went to waste!!! I really want to try black bean brownies sometime–I just will have to keep the ingredients a secret from my husband!
[...] left me with some yummy cookies too!! She made me her avocado Ogre cookies! She subbed the avocado for butter just like in my chocolate avocado cake. They had a [...]
