Everything in Moderation (except hummus)
June 5th, 2010
Hey folks!
…I have a dairy problem. I’ve been eating too much of it lately which is bad because I’m lactose intolerant!
I can handle dairy in small doses. A little bit of cheese is not a problem, and yogurt doesn’t bother me at all (which is common because of the probiotics), but if I eat ice cream or too much cheese, or anything creamy (like alfredo sauce), I’m in trouble.
I’ve discovered that by keeping my diet relatively “cream” free, that I can handle some ice cream, or a cream sauce or a milk-based drink once in a blue moon.
I think I was wearing my milk-goggles on vacation because I had too much dairy, and this week I was nauseous and lethargic all week.
Because I don’t restrict myself to food rules and I’m rarely concerned about calories, I have the tendency to over indulge in foods that I love but make me sick. Well after last night’s french fries and beer cheese, I’ve had enough!
I’m creating dairy guidelines (note: not rules) for myself.
- No more than one serving of greek yogurt/frozen yogurt per day
- No more than one serving of cheese per day
They are simple, but this way I can keep myself from getting sick while still enjoying foods that I love. With guidelines like these, when an opportunity presents itself for something like an ice cream cone or a milk-based smoothie, I can enjoy it and later not be kicking myself because I ate too much dairy already.
Moderation is key to a happy, healthy life!
On to something yummy..
As I was running this morning, I was thinking about my dairy problem and trying to figure out ways to incorporate more vegetables in my life. Yea, I have a salad a day, but that’s just not enough. I know that I love fresh veg with hummus and then I remembered that I forgot to pick up hummus! Oh well, I have all the ingredients, I’ll just make my own!
Wait… how old is that tahini?
*****
Tahini-free Hummus
1 can garbanzo beans (drained, but KEEP THE LIQUID!)
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp minced garlic (about 1 clove)
1 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground cayenne pepper
Toss all ingredients into the food processor (except the liquid from the beans) and give it a whirl. Add the liquid until you reach your desired consistency.
So easy and so yummy!!
It’s amazing because I never liked to cook at all. I still say that I don’t like it, but that might not be true. I have just never been a foodie (true story—and I’m still not). My mother in law always buys my kitchen appliances that sit unused or returned (she doesn’t really “get” me). When she got me the food processor, I rolled my eyes and thought, “when am I ever going to use this?” Now, next to my coffee pot, it’s my most used kitchen appliance! Thanks, Mother In Law, for the toy that has become the center of my “secret” life (she has no idea about this blog…)!
Anyhow, not only am I using a food processor, but I’m making yummy, healthy dishes with it! Who am I?!
Well, I’m out. Dave and I are going to the Pirates’ game tonight. I think I might sneak some of my hummus in with me. Moderation is key, until it comes to this hummus. Glad there’s no dairy in it because I can’t control myself.
What’s your favorite kitchen appliance?
Mine would probably be the food processor although I rely on my coffee pot every morning!!

Oh yes, my food processor is a God send! I can eat lactose free cottage cheese and goats milk yogurt (1/2 cup portions only). Other dairy is not so beuno for me. If I really want it, like ice cream, I’ll go for it but will pay for it later, haha. And yes, sometime ice cream or FroYo is TOTALLY worth it!!!
I’ll have to try your hummus. I also want to try a dessert hummus. I think Mama Pea and Angela has some cool recipes for those.
Hope you and Daver are having a good weekend!
Ice cream and fro yo is like the BIGGEST treat!! I haven’t had either the lactose free or goat’s milk yogurt. True story: I’m scared of anything from a goat!!!
Thanks for posting the recipe! I’ve also added lemon juice to home made hummus – I’ve never tried cumin though!
I love my food processor as well – my kitchen aid mixer steals my heart though.
Have a great weekend!
ooo I want a kitchen aid mixer!!
This hummus has a little bite to it–I love it!
And I throw cumin in just about anything
“Moderation is key to a happy, healthy life!” Amen!!
Hmmm…my favorite kitchen appliance would have to be my mandoline. I love how it slices potatoes and vegetables so evenly!
I have never even heard of a mandoline!! Now I must have one
that’s so funny, because I’ve been ODing with dairy too lately. like, a tub of ice cream in three days kind of ODing.
noted.
also so funny, because i read “I can handle some ice cream, or a cream sauce or a milk-based drink, OR A BLUE MOON.” and i spent a good two minutes trying to figure out what dairy is in Blue Moon….
fave kitchen appliance? mmm I think i’d say my stick blender… though i’m positive i WOULD say my VitaMix. if i had one. :::sigh:::
Hahah I don’t think I have ever had a Blue Moon–but I am pretty certain there’s no dairy in it
And I completely understand that ice cream problem. It’s a weakness of mine…
I also dream about a VitaMix.
I’m lactose intolerant and have those same problems…too much cheese and greek yogurt doesn’t bother me. time to cut some out so i feel better!
Glad I’m not these only one!!!!
I’m not lactose intolerant but I find that more than one to two servings of dairy a day make me feel a little bloated/icky. Fave kitchen appliance is definitely my blender! I use it every day…or twice a day….or three times. I’m obsessed…
Hope you’re having a great weekend!
Hahahah I do love my blender!! But I don’t use it as much as I should!
I’m a non-cooker too. But this recipe looks tasty. Hummus is awesome. I reallllly need a food processor so I can try this. Mashing by hand just doesn’t cut it.
Oh my! I dont know how anyone can survive without a food processor!!
Go get one now!
I love my spatula. Because I can get every scrape and lick out of the bowl. Such satisfaction like no other!
Good luck in your dairy moderation…I know that’s hard for sure!
Mmm good thought! I have an amazing spatula too!
omg girl i’m the same exact way. LOVE dairy and have it way too much, but i’m lactose intolerant too haha. i need to moderate mine as well. but i DO Have to have half and half in my coffee… anything else just won’t do
It’ssoooo hard! Thankfully I drink my coffee black or I would be in biiiigggg trouble!!
When I got my food processor as a wedding shower gift, I thought I’d never use it… Now I LOVE IT! I make stuff with it all the time. I love my homemade almond butter
Hahahaa yesss! Seems like we have a lot in common.
hey girl – my brother is violently lactose intolerant, and if he takes a lactase pill from the drug store, he can eat any amount of dairy he wants! you should look into it! they sell them in big boxes of like 200 or something. just take one before you eat and test it out! it provides your body with the enzyme it needs to break it down!
let me know if you try!

Thanks for the tip!! I don’t know if I need license to eat ice cream anytime I want
FOOD PROCESSOR. I mean i love my vitamix…but I use the food processor almost once a day!
If you like curry I have an awesome curry honey hummus recipe!!
I knew you’d say that… and YES that hummus sounds sooo good!
