Harry Potter and the Green Monster

I know I kind of skipped Father’s day on the blog. For that matter, I also skipped Mother’s day. I think it’s safe to say that my parents aren’t my most loyal readers. In fact I don’t think my dad reads my blog at all. Well, except that one time I saw him looking over my mom’s shoulder as she read through a post. But really, my parents are my  closest friends, and I don’t need to shout it on the blog—they know already!

Anyhow, I wanted to share with you all that my dad his very first green monster on Father’s day!

“Happy Father’s day, Dad! Here’s some liquid spinach!”

Surprisingly, he actually liked it.

***I have to add here that my dad shares my unusual obsession for all things Harry Potter. And we both read through the entire series once a year. And talk about it.

But don’t worry, we read other things. Deeper things, although Harry Potter is very deep if you are careful enough. In fact I did a whole project on the Biblical Symbolism in Harry Potter in college.

I also get my love for Theology from my dad, too.

And baseball. And sleeping with fans on. And chocolate. And pistachios.

I am, indeed, my father’s daughter.***

So how did I get my dad, Mr. Meat-and-Potatoes (okay, this one thing we don’t have in common), to drink a green monster?

I told him it was Polyjuice Potion.

I always said that I’m the Muggle version of Hermione Granger…

So into my cauldron I brew two large handfuls of baby spinach, half a frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup calcium fortified Orange Juice, one large spoonful of plain greek yogurt, and ice.

Stir 3 times clockwise, add eye of newt, and stir 1 and1/2 times counter clockwise. Let simmer until the next full moon.

Drink to health and energy and the boy who lived!!

Mischief managed!

Does your family eat like you? Do you make them funny things like green monsters, nut butters and overnight oats?

I’m surprised, but my family is pretty open to some of my “crazy” things!

You know, I’ve tried a Green Monster before and I thought it was disgusting! The fact that it was green reallyg grossed me out. Of course, I googled it before hand and got an idea of what to use. Even with the yummy ingredients, it still came out disgusting. But, I would try it again and maybe I should use less spinach the second time around.

HP… I had the first book somewhere but never read it.

My parents try all my crazy nutrition concotions. My mom liked my green monster the other day. Love it!

  3. This post cracked me up. I love that your dad is hard core HP. :)

My whole family is pretty healthy, and I really admire my mom’s approach to food and eating. It just feels so organic, in that it’s innate.. no rules.. some indulgences.. lots of good things. I’m envious of that!

  5. My hubby hates natural nut butters, wouldn’t dream of eating overnight oats, and thinks I’m crazy for drastically reducing my meat consumption. My mom has some of the same tendencies as me toward food, but she doesn’t understand the limiting meat yet either.

But my husband has gone through all of the Harry Potter books multiple times now, so at least I got him on that one! :-)

Hahah your hubby sounds like mine, but mine is getting more on board, thankfully. And he loves Harry Potter, too!!

  6. On fathers daye Avocado Chocolate Pudding for dessert, however only my mom knew what it was. I was semi honest in telling the family it was homemade chocolate pudding. It wasn’t until after they claimed to like it and had eaten it all that I told them it was avocado. I still feel bad for being sneaky though. :-\

They eat pretty healthily but when I’m home even more so =) They said if I move back they’ll pay me to cook for them, lol. It’s fun that they’re always open to trying the crazy things I make. The whole fam definitely loved the nut butters I brought!

Your family is so cool! And I’m jealous of all of the “testings” you had for them! I’d try it with myfamily but it woul probably only be me and my mom!

  8. Dorry says:

They don’t necessarily eat like me but they’ve gotten very used to me bringing my own food or making a variation of their meal. I love to share my favorite healthy creations with them. My fiance is very open to trying anything I make and I love that about him!

    • abbynormally says:

Hahah I love to share my creations too, but not too many of them like it when I share. Hey, it’s thei fault–they are the ones who taught me toshare when I was little!

That’s hilarious. My hubby and kids are constantly getting my new concoctions. Most recent is my obsession with Quinoa. They are liking it!

  10. Nikki says:

That would be quite interesting to hear about what conclusions you came up with for your project on the Biblical Symbolism in Harry Potter. I’ve only seen the movies…I really need to get all of the books now I think.

As for the family eating habits…I had to teach myself all about health and nutrition because I came from a long line of obese family. And more recently, I’ve cleaned up my eating even more. My husband has been pretty open to some of the new things we’ve been having, and loves a lot of it. But he’s not afraid to tell me when he doesn’t like something.

Perhaps I’ll dig out my old notes and put them out there sometime!!

That’s awesome that yo were able to get yourself healthy! I know my family cleaned up our diets when my older bro was really sick with colitis. It’s amazing what a healthy diet can do for your body!

  11. My family kind of eats like me, but sometimes they look at me like I’m crazy. They will basically eat anything I cook, which is good! I LOVe Harry Potter, my sister is already plotting when to get to Universal!

  12. Bwew says:

Since I am the parent that reads your blog….I am still waiting for your Mother’s Day post….and I tried the green monster months ago…and still make them for myself!!!!

  13. Lindsay says:

My family has started eating more like me. I remember last year when my dad turned his nose up at quinoa..now he loves it!!!

  14. Susan says:

My sister hated when I lived at home and would cook for the family since I make lots of healthy things…she was actually convinced I was trying to turn everyone vegetarian! I’m not even vegetarian and I would cook meat from time to time…just more veggies. :)

Love that your dad loves Harry Potter…too funny. :)

  15. you are too funny!

Let me know if you try them out!!!! I am loving itso far. I’m going to start a weekly Barefoot post (hopefully)!

  16. This post is kind of funny. My dad would flip if I gave him a green smoothie. He, unfortunately, wants nothing to do with my eating style. He will constantly look at my food and ask if “that’s tofu?” I love him and he cracks me up, but I really wish I could introduce him to some new green foods.

    • abbynormally says:

Awww! Daddy’s girls are always trying to feed their fathers vegetables! I almost got him to eat kale chips once. He was already a little sick, so he decided to pass. I WILL make them again. But if I ever tried to get hm to eat tofu.. I’d lose him for good!!

  17. Melissa says:

I love how much you love Harry Potter! I’m a HUGE fan too. I wish I had a parent or close friend who loved it enough to have regular discussions about the series. The best I can hope for is taking my parents, brother, and boyfriend to the Harry Potter theme park in October. :)
