Thursday Truths
June 24th, 2010
I sensed the need for another confessional. I hope you all derive some sort of satisfaction or joy out of my faux pas.
First of all, I wore heels today.
I had a business trip and it’s hot out, so the outfit that I chose only looked right with heels.
I regretted it the moment I took my first step. So much so that I’m looking for someone who is willing to don on my pointy-toed stilettos and give me a swift kick in my bum, because apparently the pains in my knees and feet aren’t bad enough.
Second of all, I totally botched an extremely easy dessert recipe. And it involved ice cream, which is another pain-inducing vice of mine. Dave had some serious recon efforts while I was away all day.
So I can neither cook nor practice self control. Someone, please kick me again.
Or, I’ll just share the recipe with you. Be warned, this is NOT the most healthy dessert you’ll find on this blog, and for that reason it might be the tastiest (but I did include some healthier substitutions…I know, you love me).
My mom used to make this for us all the time, and I believe that recipe came from a friend of hers. I should send her a thank-you note. You should too.
Cold and Crunchy
2 1/2 c. crisped rice cereal
1 c. shredded coconut (healthier version: unsweetened coconut)
1 c. broken pecans
1 stick butter (healthier version: only 5 tbsp butter)
3/4 c. brown sugar (healthier version: replace with 1/2 c. honey)
1 gallon vanilla ice cream, slightly softened (healthier version: frozen vanilla yogurt)
Pre heat oven to 300 F.
Combine rice cereal, coconut, pecans, and butter and cook in oven (healthier version: include honey), stirring occasionally until evenly browned (about 30 minutes). Mix in brown sugar (healthier version: omit). Press half of the rice mixture in the bottom of a 9×13 pan. I don’t add the pecans because Dave doesn’t like them! Eep!
Cover with the ice cream then add the rest of rice mixture on the top. Cover and freeze!
I confess, I love this stuff. And all of the discomfort my lactose intolerance may cause might just be worth it. Phew! that felt good to get out
Oh, wait, there’s more: I have to admit that I did not get up at 5 am this morning. I didn’t get up at 5:30 when I re-set my alarm. No, I did not get up to exercise at all. All that I did was lose some precious minutes of sleep because of that danged alarm. I need to learn that morning exercising is not my thing—sleep is.
I know Dave is considering a brief moment in my Nine West heels to kick me because he is thoroughly sick of my phone chirping “Calypso” at the butt crack of dawn. I don’t blame him.
I also have to confess that I noticed that no one was tweeting me at 5 am, so I’m wondering if I’m the only one who deserves a stiletto in the rear today? Eh?
Are you a morning or evening exerciser? What are your tricks for keeping yourself on a schedule?
Obviously I am not a morning person, but I will run in the AM on weekends when I can get up at a reasonable time!

My legs get sore enough from running. I couldn’t imagine that + wearing heels(not like I ever would…)
Please, dont wear heels. For many reasons, k?!
Try as I might, I have zero energy for morning exercise. Come 5PM though, my energy is through the roof. Oh well!
Hahaha I relate to that!
I’m on a morning kick lately! I plan my workouts a few days ahead and try to make things easy in the morning by getting my clothes laid out, water bottle ready, etc the night before. I do my best to keep on schedule but I listen to my body – if I need more sleep, I’ll skip a morning workout. Sleep is so important!
I do the SAME thing (getting prepared), but it means nothng when that alarm goes off. Siiigh.
LOL such a cute post!!! That dessert sounds like perfection!! Pecan hater?? Pshhhhh!! I’m a mid day or evening exerciser. I’m sure I could get on a morning routine but it honestly makes me SO much hungrier all day long that I can’t stand it. XO
I know! I can’t believe I married someone who doesn’t like pecans!! It’s just not…normal!
I desperately try to be a morning exerciser but like you, I hit snooze too many times because sleep is just that important.
That dessert looks SO GOOD. Can’t go wrong with those ingredients.
Hehe glad I’m not alone!
The dessert is DANGEROUS! I love it–it is so sweet!
Heel + cuffed dress pants = Me falling face first on the ground/or down a stairwell. This has happened on more than one occasion. This is why I’ve given up wearing heels.
Never mind the fact that they make my already screaming from running and lunging calves want to seize up right then and there in protest.
PS. I can’t tweet you at 5AM, that would be 2AM my time. And trust me, nobody would like you at all if you required me to awake at 2AM to tweet!
Hahahah we have too much in common!!
I haven’t worn heels in probably over a year. Hate them too! Okay, next time, I promise to tweet you by 5:30am!
That dessert looks totally worth the lactose pain….I’m down for it!
Hehehe I’ll hold you to it, friend!
Hahaha I’m lactosintolerant too but some things are just work getting sick over! Although I will admit, I’ve only eaten Dave and Andy’s icecream once because of how sick it made me. That my friend was not worth it to me.
Dave and Andy’s is my kryptonite!! Their birthday cake ice cream is soooo good. I am amazed at your self control!!!!
I’m an early riser and get moving right away. Up at 4:45 and workout out at 5:00. I don’t run that early though – I workout to videos. On weekends I’m up and actually running by 7:00. I love the feeling of moving right away. On the days that I do decide to sleep in I’m sluggish all day. It helps that I go to bed 9-10:00.
That’s impressive! It takes me some serious time to start functioning like a human in the morning. My husband knows that he can’t talk to me for at least an hour…and by that time he’s off to work
I’m a “morning” exerciser, but I work 3-11pm, so my “morning” is a bit of a skewed idea.
I’m having trouble waking up before 10am right now! Oops. Even when I had a more normal schedule, morning running was never my thing. I’m definitely a night owl so waking up earlyyyy is sooo hard to do!
I have no idea how people wear heels…especially really tall ones!
Ohhh the days when I slept in till 10…but I was never a nurse. Well, I was a nursing student, does that count? Sometimes I wish that I cold wear scrubs and crocs to work everyday!
I am not a morning person either – it is hard for me to workout. However, it is more likely for me to workout in the morning then after work.
Hope your legs feel better. I wore bad shoes yesterday and my legs are yelling at me today!
Thanks! Runners’ legs really have a hard life
I’m a morning person because work forces me to be, but to workout before work I’d have to get up at three in the morning! That’s not happening. I hit the gym in the afternoon!
3 am?? Oh, that’s a terrible thought!!!!!!
I read this on Thursday but couldn’t comment on my phone and this dessert looks so amazing I had to comment to tell you. I like to workout in the morning too, especially when it’s light out. I’m just not that good at working out after work especially when it’s super hot. Everyone has to do what works right?
Have a great weekend.
Yea I understand that! Last summer I actually did get up sometimes because I knew the heat would be unbearable. As for now, it’s still ok, so I’ll just continue to sleep in
Hey Abby! Just stopping by to say hi
Our friends just bought a house in Hollidaysburg, so we were strolling around with them down there a few days ago…I got a latte at the Black Dog and thought of you!
Hope your summer is going well…I see that you’re doing the barefoot running thing– one of my friends from Louisiana has gotten into that, and she LOVES it! Can’t wait to read more about it!
Aww!! I love that little town! We need to met up sometime I’m home. I’ll be home over the 4th, but my cousin from Hong Kong will be in, so I don’t think I’ll have time. But we need to get coffee or something some time I am home!
Definitely! Yeah, we’re going to meet my family in Nantucket for the fourth, so we won’t be there either. BUT– some day!
I’m a morning exerciser… my alarm went off at 3:50 this morning for a run. Gotta beat the heat!
Ice cream is no longer in my diet, I’ve decided the way it makes me feel isn’t worth the momentary enjoyment. But soy ice cream is pretty tasty. Of course, I haven’t had ice cream in 17 years, so my memory is probably skewed.
If I lived in Vegas, I’d probably be a morning runner too!!!
And I loove Soy Ice Cream. So Delicious makes a really yummy chcolate PB flavor that I adore!!
