Spicy Chipotle Hummus

Allow me to vent:

I don’t watch TV too often. If it’s on, it’s background noise, but my husband turns on Sports Center every single morning. I’m certainly not opposed to it, but I am completely sick of Brett Favre. So since I am entering the third football season as a married woman, I have not missed one day of Mr. Favre’s drama.

I cannot stand him! He loves drama more than a hormonal high school girl. Is he really that insecure that he needs to gain attention by putting us through three years of indecision? Either retire or don’t. Just make up your mind. While you’re losing your chances to win the Super Bowl, you’re also losing fans.

But there’s one thing that I despise more than Brett Favre, it would be the allergies that plague me at the end of every summer. I spent yesterday in a stuffy, groggy, Benedryl-induced haze which made me a bear to deal with. Just ask Dave. No, wait. Don’t. I have a positive image to uphold here on Abby Normally…and I certainly don’t want to be the Brett Favre of Healthy Living Blogging by inviting you into my personal drama.

So, instead of explaining why I lost my patience waiting in the Deli line (or even why a vegetarian was in the Deli line in the first place), I’ll just share a recipe.

I should preface this by saying that I finally got a food processor that can handle Ashley’s Roasted Maple Cinnamon Almond Butter.

If you like spicy food, you’re going to love this hummus recipe. And if you don’t, it’s at least good for clearing your sinuses (take my word for it).

Spicy Chipotle Hummus

  • 1 can garbanzo beans (drained—but keep the liquid)
  • 2 chipotle peppers
  • 3 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 tsp. adoba sauce (the sauce that the chipotle peppers are in)
  • 1 clove garlic ( ~ 1 tsp. minced garlic)
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. ground pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 tbsp. tahini (optional! you can use the liquid from the garbanzos instead)

The instructions are simple: throw it all in the food processor and let it whirl. You can add the liquid until you like the consistency.

This stuff is some powerful stuff. David is obsessed with it…it’s all he can talk about. I’ve been enjoying it on a wrap with Swiss cheese (it mutes the bite a little bit) and spinach…toasted of course, because melty, gooey cheese is the antithesis of Brett Favre and seasonal allergies.

Well, I’m out. I’m gonna try another morning run tomorrow… half marathon is only days away!

What’s the most annoying celebrity news? Does Brett Favre make your skin crawl too, or do you find Lindsay Lohan to be a train wreck—so horrible but you can’t look away!

I should add that I am entirely out of touch with pop culture and news. All I know is that Lohan was sentence to some prison time…on what charges, or for how long, I have no idea. There are just other things I’d rather spend my time and energy on!

YOu know I like Spice! Send it my way. I’ll trade you some fruit roll up for some hummus, deal?

  2. Dorry says:

I love spice, too! And I use my Cuisinart to make hummus at least a couple times a week – so easy, so good. Billy is obsessed with football – Pro and College – it’s something he told me up front right when we met. Ha. And now we’re getting married right as the season begins. :)

  3. Like you, I’m also out of the pop culture loop. I don’t have a tv, and I’m too busy most days to actively search the internet for it. While it’s nice not to hear about Lindsay L.’s latest stories from the slammer, I do feel too out of touch with U.S. and world news. :(
P.S. That hummus looks amazing! I need to start making my own, for sure! :)

  4. Ashley says:

Yay yay yay!!! Glad you finally got it :)

  5. Kacy says:

Haha, your happiness over that food processor brings joy to my heart!

Favre is a nut job, I can’t stand him or Lindsay Lohan or any of the under-16 pop stars or Twilight kids.

I’m researching food processors right now. What model did you get?

I’m so sick of Favre. I’m also tired of hearing about Lindsay, Miley, Paris, Rob, Snookie… etc. I guess it’s my own fault for turning the TV on.

  7. I am sick of all things Justin Bieber. He’s a kid and he’s got about 3 minutes left in his five and I can’t wait for it to be over!!

  8. Awesome food processor, love my 14-cup Cuisinart and so important for turning frozen bananas into ice cream. Great hummus recipe, I’m a fan of all things spicy. I’m tired of hearing about the Real Housewives of where ever – super annoying, whiny drama addicts that wear drag queen makeup.

  9. Even more than the people that are reported in pop culture news, I’m sick of the way the media makes these people the “news”. It’s pathetic when CNN sets up camp outside a prison to get a glimpse of Lindsay Lohan when there are other things in the world to report on. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine… I haven’t been watching news much over the past couple years because I get frustrated with the amount of non-news reported. It does leave me a little out of the loop sometimes, but that’s okay.

I need a Cuisinart… my food processor is weak, I’d never dare try a nut butter in it because it struggles with some simple things!

Ugh, I know what you mean! Your Bret Farve is my Paris Hilton. I’m so sick of seeing her in the news! Can someone remind me why she is even famous to begin with?! Anywho, that was my little rant ;) I’m sorry you spent your weekend in an allergy coma :( Allergies totally bite. And I’m going to try out that recipe! Jason loves spicy hummus, and he’ll love this one MORE because we can make it at home! Thanks for sharing :D

  11. Haha… that was a random rant intro for chipotle hummus!! BUT. Girl…. you’re tellin’ me. You guys don’t even live in Minnesota! Sometimes I swear the nightly “news” is over 50% Farve.

ANYWAYS. Good timing on this recipe. I accidentally bought a can of chick peas at Target last week, and had no idea what to do with them. Beans kinda weird me out, but pureed, I think I might be able to handle them. ;)
