Close Call
October 13th, 2010
Yesterday my husband was hit by a car while riding his bike!
It’s nothing serious, thankfully. The guy backed into him in a parking lot (Dave rides his bike to work). He’s a little banged up (thankfully he looks better than his bike)…but you know what, accidents happen and the guy seemed apologetic and all, so Dave just went on his merry way.
Well today the guy told Dave he wants him to pay for his smashed tail light. Because apparently Dave should have seen him backing up, and that if he wasn’t riding a fixed gear bike he would have had better breaks to stop. (??!!!)
NO WAY!
Go talk to your insurance company and see what they say…because ours is certainly saying that it’s your fault!
Want to know the best part about it?
Dave didn’t tell me because he didn’t want me to worry.
So how do I know about it?
Geico called me at lunch today wanting the details of the bicycle accident.
WHAT ACCIDENT?!!!??!!
…and then I couldn’t get a hold of David on his phone (because he was talking to Geico on the other line, DUH)
Yea, I had a slight panic attack at work today.
We’re all ok here in Abby Normally world, though. A little emotional and a little sore, but I think we’ll be just fine!
So cyclists be careful, and drivers be AWARE.
Now I’m going to go spend the evening with my husband and thank God that He kept him safe.

Oh my gosh, the nerve of that guy! It amazes me how some people think. Glad everything’s okay!
Glad Dave is okay! The other guys insurance should be paying for Dave to get a new bike not the other way around!
Oh my gosh!! Are you kidding me?! 1. I can’t believe it happened and 2. I can’t believe he wants you to pay for it! What?! That dude is off his rocker.
Ahhh! I would’ve been freaking out! Thank goodness he is okay
And is that man CRAZY?! You tell him you ain’t payin for JACK. Haha..but just say it in a friendly, professional way of course
What a douche
Hahahhahah my thoughts exactly!!
Wow, I’m sooo glad he is ok but it really irritates me that he has the nerve to say it was your fault!!! lol… good luck with the whole situation Abby!
ugh, some people! WHen he lived in Hawaii, some people got so mad at sharing the road with cyclists that they would actually hit them on PURPOSE> THEY ARE CRAZY!!
So glad Dave is okay. Hope that guy realizes that he is CRAZY too!
I can’t even believe that drivers would purposely hit cyclists! That is awful!!
Glad your husband is okay. I would have been freaked out. Sounds like the guy is just trying to get some money out of you guys. Clearly, it is his fault. Good luck.
That’s exactly what we thought!
SO glad he is okay…ridiculous about the guy wanting Dave to pay! Some people…..geeeeez. Damn those fixed gear bikes
Hahah Does Chris want another one?!
not for sale.
This is a beyond crazy story.
Glad Dave is ok! I would have been having such an anxiety attack if I hadn’t been able to reach my husband and I heard about a bike accident.
Yikes! Crazy the guy had the nerve to try and have him pay?!? Glad everyone is OK.
Glad Dave is okay! Your insurance wants YOU to pay for it? Why?!
No! We just called our insurance to get their professional opinion on the situation. They said if anyone should pay, it should be the guy that hit Dave. When they said that, Dave felt pretty confident in telling him “NO!”
Welp I thought the driver seemed nice for a minute but now I just think he’s a giant jerk. Pretty sure you’re at fault if you’re 1. backin up and hit something and 2. if you hit a person….duhhh!! I’m sure Geico will help you out getting everything taken care of.
And I’m really glad to hear Dave wasn’t seriously hurt!
Yea, Dave legally had the right of way.. pathetic!
Poor Dave! And poor YOU!
I rode my bike to work for three months last year, and not one ride went by without a driver doing *something* dangerous. Drives me crazy.
Having said that — and I don’t mean anything about this particular case — I also get annoyed with cyclists who do break the rules and give we safe riders a bad name.
I know exactly what you mean. It just takes a few stupid cyclists to give all a bad name!
So glad he is ok. Good luck with the insurance stuff.
A lady almost backed into me while I was running the other day. She was in a convertable and I yelled at her to please watch it and she still never heard or saw me. If I hadn’t gotten out of the way she would have smashed me and probably kept driving. I was annoyed to say the least. People definitely need to be more aware!
I’m so glad that Dave is okay!!
That is so scary!! It’s upsetting that drivers only look for other cars! What about us?!
OMG!! First of all, I would have KILLED my husband myself if he hadn’t of told me about the accident. And second of all, WTF about the driver!!!! People should always yield to pedestrians and cyclists!!
Yesterday, my husband’s cousin’s wife was killed when she pushed her child out of the way of a car about to hit him. She got hit instead. AND she was even using a crosswalk. I’m so sick of motorist NOT paying attention! And NOT taking responsibility!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!
Sorry, totally crazy rant, but you know where I’m coming from.
That is so sad to hear!! I know, motorists need to understand that they have a lot of responsibility in their hands when they get behind the wheel. So, so sad.
Seems like there is always controversy over who has the “right of way” – bikers or motorists? I like to ride bike out on the highway by my house but since this time of year it’s filled with tractors and grain trucks my husband doesn’t let me (though I don’t put up a fight about it).
My husband is always out on highways and it scares me. I don’t fight him though, but only because I lose. I’m stubborn, for sure, but he is more so!
I’m glad your husband is okay, and it’s up to the person backing up to pay attention anyway. I’m pretty sure you don’t have the “right of way” when you’re backing out…you’re supposed to yield. (And tail lights are cheap…that guy can suck it. Someone hit my husband’s car when it was parked at work…we had to pay our deductible because it was a “hit and run”…grr.)
That’s sucks! Hit and runs are awful
So glad he’s OK.
But the nerve of that driver. He should be thankful that your husband didn’t suffer a broken leg or worse. I tell ya….people don’t want to take responsibility for their actions.
I added a link to this post on my blog to help spread the word about safety on your run, or any activity.
Thank you, Melyssa! I really appreciate it!
