Things I’m Loving: Songs
May 13th, 2011
Since last night I blogged about singing in my car and giving construction men some innocent entertainment, I thought it would be a good time to let you know three songs that I have been loving on this week.
But first, I have to let you in on a little secret:
I’m not that into music.
I’ve got my favorite bands and that is that. A new song or musician basically has to hit me across the face for me to notice it. I don’t listen to the radio. Nope. I’ve been listening to the same music for a very long time.
In fact, I’m working on my marathon playlist right now which is really just some really long sermons and a couple of my favorite songs.
Regardless of this, I still love the music and maybe you will too!
1. “Aside” by The Weakerthans. I seem to relate a lot to this song. I don’t know why I just think that some of the words ring true, if not for the place I’m in now, but the place where I was when I first heard it. Plus, The Weakerthans have lyrics that are on an entirely different level than most other bands.
“And I’m leaning on this broken fence between past and present tense. And I’m losing all those stupid games that I swore I’d never play…and it almost feels ok.”
Here’s a link to the song, plus a really amazing clip-art slideshow that someone put together based on the lyrics. It’s clutch.
Ok, the only band I know whose lyrics I enjoy more wrote this next song…
2. “In Exile” by Thrice. Thrice is one of my favorite bands. Dustin Kensrue, their lead singer, is my favorite song writer and singer of all time. His lyrics are taken from a number of places: the Bible, Plato, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien… is it any wonder I’m obsessed? Plus, each of their albums has an entirely new sound. I often listen to all of the songs on shuffle on long road trips and it’s amazing that I’m listening to the same band. In Exile talks about a longing for heaven that proves that we were not meant to last long in this world.
“My heart is filled with songs of Forever, a city that endures when all is made new. I know I don’t belong here, I’ll never call this place my home. I’m just passing through.”
The music video can be found here. I love all things Thrice (and Kensrue!!!)! Annnnd they are in the studio recording a new album!
3. “Never Knew” by The Rocket Summer. This is my go-to sunshine band. When the weather is warm and sunny, it’s a given I’ll be jamming to them. I have seriously never heard a happier band in my life. Never Shout Never is close, but still Rocket Summer wins. This song is great because there’s one line that wants me to hop out of my car and skip down the road:
“And as they strolled along, my heart broke out in song, from all the things and the thoughts and assumptions that I had wrong. And now I’ll be on my way to make this claim, I’ll make it famous in every way, I’ll make it stay when I will say…
NO! none of it’s true, cuz I never knew You and now the truth of it is, is I wanna be like you. So hello, good friend, I want to be next to you. For my head, for my heart, for it’s true.”
If those lyrics don’t make you happy enough. Listen here. I promise that it will brighten your day. It starts out slow, but don’t worry, you’ll be skipping by the end of it.
