I’m Ashamed

I did it. Something I never thought I would do.

I bought a Kindle.

To be honest, I am shocked and embarrassed and it’s actually taken me a while to get the nerve to share with you my latest purchase.

I own a Kindle? Who am I?

I spent my college career (and thousands upon thousands of dollars) devoted to my love of antiquity. Older is better. Heck, I’m surprised I don’t have a diary of papyrus.

Actually, I don’t even have a diary.

But books? I love them. I love the sound of pages turning. I love the smell. I love the satisfaction I get watching my progress by how many pages I have left to read. Reading books is one of my favorite pastimes–why would I adulterate it by reducing it to no more than a collection of 0s and 1s? Books are made of words, not binary symbols.

Oh, and I have to add that this is an opinion that I have held loudly.

Inserting my foot in my mouth now.

As I have been planning for my trip to Rome and what I need to pack, I realized that books tend to take up the most space in my carry-ons. And since there are long flights and perhaps a bus trip to Pompeii, I would need a lot of books. What to do??

Oh right. Buy a Kindle. So I did. And I already kind of love it. Please don’t tell anyone.

So far I have read The Hunger Games trilogy and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. However, I borrowed the physical copies of The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest which means only one thing…

Do you have a Kindle? What books should I read?

  1. I have a kindle, I got it for my birthday last year. I thought I would never own one, since my love for physical books is so strong. But when you go on a trip, the flight is long and you have a ton of down time, having a kindle is like having chocolate cake whenever you need it, because it’s so tiny and fits EVERYWHERE. I use it only when I travel, but if I’m at home…it’s time to read the good ol’ paperback books. :) Don’t be ashamed…we all do it eventually, haha!

I think that Kindles and e-readers are the future of books. The program directors at the college where I work talk about getting students Kindles or iPads and having them order ebooks instead of buying the hard copies. Seems like a good idea and very efficient.

  2. I have a kindle and I love it. Instead of seeing how many pages I have left, I can just see what percentage of the book I have left. And I love that I don’t have to store all the books around my house when I’m finished or find someone/somewhere to donate them.

Hahah I’m a book hoarder, so storing them is never really a problem. :) But I’m sure my husband is glad that I don’t have to stuff them anywhere anymore.

I was the SAME way. I resisted buying one – I am a fan of the library. Then I caved.

I don’t regret it one bit.

Yea. I am going to get a library card at a local library (i usually just use the college library where I work) because you can check books out on your Kindle! That is so cool. It’s like the best of both worlds.

I’m obsessed with my Kindle! Best purchase ever! I think I read about 4 books on mine while on my honeymoon. You honestly won’t be able to so back to regular books anymore. I read so much faster on the Kindle too. So excited!! Now we can swap books!!

I am with you – I was anti-Kindle for a long time but then we got an old school one (it’s literally the size of a magazine) and I love it and want a new, smaller one! It’s really the most amazing thing when you travel.

You know.. it really is amazing how EASY it is to carry around. And I got a cute purple cover for it too. With a light. It’s like my pet. Except that Dave has taken it from me to read and he ditched the purple cover. I wonder why…??

  6. Susan says:

I’m anti-Kindle too but that’s probably because I don’t have one and am jealous. Okay, we need to talk books and hockey – STAT. I miss you!

  7. I love books (the smell, the turning of pages) … or so I keep telling myself since I don’t own a Kindle.

My husband and I were both english majors and book collectors. We have both our office and family room filled with books … We are out of space! So we got a kindle for him and an iPad with kindle app for me. Love both! The kindle is fantastic for travel. I always use it in the summer at the pool or beach … Love the display and the fact that it really feels like a book!

  9. i would love a kindle for traveling, but otherwise i’m all about the old school version. can’t wait to hear what you think after trying for awhile!
