Meet Abby

Hi there!

I’m Abby and welcome to my corner of the world.

(That’s me, by the way. My sister-in-law took that picture. She’s so talented!)

If you’re going to stick around here, which I hope you do, here’s what you need to know about me:

I’m 25 and I live in Pittsburgh with my husband, Dave, and our dog, Dexter. I started this blog in ’09 to share my passions and what I am learning through them. I believe that God gave us all passions and talents that we may use them to glorify Him and bless others.

I love to run and sometimes other forms of exercise, but my heart really belongs to running. You can usually find me running all over the greater Pittsburgh region and even in some races when I need a new t-shirt.

I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh way back in ’07 with degrees in Classics and Philosophy. I took the long route to a humanities degree by making a “PITT” stop in the school of Nursing for a year a half. I love people, but I love dead philosophers and emperors more.

Books. I love them. I will read anything that makes me think. I will also quote a lot of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling. If you think that makes me weird, you’re totally right. And if you didn’t get the “weird” vibe when I mentioned Classics and Philosophy, you must not have had your coffee yet today.

I dabble in photography in my free time. I have a blog just for my snaps, which you can find by clicking here.

Another thing you need to know about me is that I raised with boys. This has made me rather independent but is mostly responsible for my love of sports. Steelers, Pirates and, most importantly, Penguins Hockey. It’s always a great day for hockey!

I also have celiac disease and while this is by no means a food blog, I will occasionally  post about my adventures in gluten-free cooking and eating because it’s new to me and I know a lot of people struggle with celiacs, too.

Omg, I love philosophy, running, and literature (although it sounds like you might not…?). SO happy to have found your blog (:

    • abbynormally says:

Thanks! I do love literature, people just think that’s what I studied in college, but I didn’t. The term “Classics” can be so confusing! Glad we’ve found blogging friends! :)

  2. just for the record – both of those photos are absolutely ADORABLE. xoxo

  3. Lindsay says:

I tend to think/pray a lot of my runs too. Especially those long runs! Glad I found your adorable blog.

    Cheers,
    LC

  4. Hey Girl!
As I was reading through some blogger’s friend lists, I ran across yours! I noticed that you are a runner. Me too! My husband and I actually just completed our first marathon! It was so fabulous! Would love to talk you about it!

  9. Abby- I just recently found your blog and am loving reading it! I’m just training for my first 1/2 marathon, but have been a runner for a while :) Now if I could only get my husband to train with me! Love your post about body image especially… hits so close to home!

  10. Greg says:

    Hi!
Just found your site through finnyfinds.com Always fun to read other runner’s blogs. Im more into the triathlon scene, but running is my fav for sure. Best of luck!

  11. Jamie says:

Hi! I am so happy I found your blog. I am a fellow Pittsburgh girl, and I have been searching for some local bloggers. I don’t have a blog but I have been following the “healthy” blogs for a while and have been trying to find some around my area.

  12. I love your statement about why God gives us passions. I 110% agree!

  13. Dorry says:

I’m so glad I came across your blog! I’ll be checking back daily :)

  14. Holly says:

Hi, Abby, just moved to Pittsburgh and just found your blog! I like your healthy balance with life, food, and exercise. You have a new loyal follower!

    • abbynormally says:

Hi Holly!!! Glad you found me and that we have another healthy living advocate in our city!!! Please keep in touch!

  15. Denise says:

Hi, Abby! I just found your website, and I was wondering. I see that you eat very healthy, which I am trying to do as well. You mentioned that you lost 40 pounds since 2005, and I was wondering if there was a particular plan you followed to do it. Did you count anything or just change your eating habits? Or is that when you started running? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It’s nice to know others are out there that share the same Christian beliefs, too. That was a nice bonus when I found your site.

  16. Hey Abby! I heard that you were from Altoona from a fellow blogger (Katie at Healthy Heddleston). I grew up in Altoona as well and graduated in 2005! And I played softball!! Crazy world right? :)

    • abbynormally says:

We probably played each other in softball! Actually, you probably know my cousin… Casey Weidemann! I know I played against her, so you guys must have been on the same team!

Thanks for the comment! Added you to my reader. Do you know newlywednewlyveg.com? She’s in Altoona, too!

  17. Whitney says:

Hey! What made you decide against being a nurse?

    • abbynormally says:

Oh, it was a couple of things. I really liked all of the science courses, but wasn’t very interested in the nursing-specific classes. Also, I was extremely sensitive to my patients–which is a good thing, but I had trouble seperating myself from them. That’s probably something I would have learned to do over time, but I didn’t want to change that about myself. I think that vulnerability is a really good and necessary thing in love and relationships and as a nurse, I just couldn’t handle that. I take things really hard and tend to worry whether or not I’m doing something the right way–and in nursing I was in charge of things way too important and it would be too easy for me to stress. I didn’t want my career to run my life!

So with all of that said, I figured that I should leave nursing to the better, more qualified people. Haven’t looked back once yet! I LOVED studying classics!

  18. Stacey says:

Um, I’m pretty sure that you are my bloggie sister :D I LOVE the Beatles!!!! Greatest rock/pop band ever. And I too am terrified of tofu..the consistency of it scares me. And good for you for keeping off the 40 pounds! Not a lot of people can do that, congrats Abby :)

  19. T says:

Oh Abby!! I’m so glad you put this on FB, bc I never knew you had a blog, and it’s like I finally get to have you in my life again, if even in doses :) I love reading your writing, and I miss you!

  20. Sammybunny says:

Abby, I am SO enjoying your blog and we seem to be a LOT alike! I, too, married my high school sweetheart and he was a philosophy major who now works in IT at the college we both went to. I hope that you are doing well and enjoying the spring weather. I am truly inspired by your writing and I think that your posts are going to be great blessings to many people. Isn’t God so good?

    Have a great day!

    Leah

  21. Susan says:

I love finding other ‘burgh bloggers too! You are a great writer and I’ve been enjoying your posts on the sly for a while. I know, I’m a sneak/blog creeper.

    Have a great Tuesday!

  22. Allie says:

YAY I found another Pittsburgher in the blog world! I <3 your blog :)

  23. Rach says:

Aww, I love this blog! My husband is an accountant and when working on our future family plan, we quickly realized that there are certain times of the year that would be MUCH better to be giving birth than others, haha!

Oh! And by the way, you are beautiful! Love all the shots of you. The camera just loves you! :)

  24. Hey there! Just found your blog not too long ago, and I love it!!! I’m a runner, too, and am hoping to run my first full this spring! Love that you were a classics major… I took 3 years of Latin in high school and LOVED it!

  25. Sarah says:

Just came across your blog :) I love it :) Degrees in classics and philosophy, I am jealous… two of my biggest interests!

  26. Hii Abby! Awww It’s so great meeting you! So great to see that you love CS Lewis!! Some of his quotes man…the things he says can never be wrong! haha–Well, after the Bible. :P And your pics with your love are so cute~love the wedding dress, the hair, everything lol.

  27. Lauren says:

Hey there!! I just found your blog and I wanted to say hello to a fellow Pa’er! :) I live in Harrisburg but I’m actually planning to visit Pittsburg for business this summer. It’s great to meet you and I hope to say in touch.

  28. Emily says:

Hi, I just found your blog! Had to comment on here, because I studied classics and philosophy at Pitt too. Latin and Greek are underrated life skills :)

So glad I clicked on over here!

  29. Christina says:

ahhhhhh! I love your blog! I really enjoyed reading this. I think it’s so cool that you’re a philosophy major and that you’re a big fan of c.s. lewis. That makes me really happy! I can’t wait to read your future posts! :)

  30. Just wanted to say hello, from one Pitt grad & blogger to another =)

  31. Chelsie says:

I just found your blog and wanted to say that I really appreciate a lot of things about it. First I like the fact that you are yourself. I just started blogging a little less than a year ago and started off feeling like I needed to do things perfectly if I was going to get anyone to read it, then I realized who cares and am still working on making it my own. Second I love that you love Jesus and are not afraid to show it on your blog. If you ever make it over to the Poconos feel free to stop by for a visit.

  32. Cait says:

Hey Abby! I found your blog and have a few things to say. First off, I am a fellow runner nut and just read your recent post about what you should expect when training and died laughing about the part where you will be a bottomless pit. It’s so funny how us runners are usually getting flack for being skinny but we could outeat most football players, no joke! :) The next thing is that the reason I found your site was I read the little blurb on your twitter page and got to the part about you loving sarcasm…on my list of fav’s that ranks right up there with running, so I of course had to click the link..lol. Finally, you’re blog is just great and I’m looking forward to reading more. Also, a HUGE congrats on dropping 40lbs…that’s such a huge accomplishment. Anyways, sorry for the epic comment, but wanted to say HI and keep up the blogging. :)

  33. Kiah says:

    Abby,
Can’t wait to read more! Thanks for sharing!

  34. Tangy says:
